What

Join together with SHA Bryn Mawr as the international family of the Sacred Heart honors Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne with a day of service in her name.  Celebrating Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, a pioneer missionary of the Society of the Sacred Heart, who came to St. Charles, Missouri, from France and founded the first free school west of the Mississippi in September 1818.

When

Global Service Day on Saturday, September 15, 2018, marks the anniversary of the day Philippine opened the first Sacred Heart school in the New World, the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri. (The school opened on September 14, 1818.)

More Details

  • Volunteers of all ages
  • Check age restrictions at each location before registering
  • Volunteers arrange transportation to and from each service site
  • Student volunteers will be given a permission slip to complete after registration
  • Although not required, we encourage parents to volunteer alongside their daughter if possible 
  • After registering, volunteers will receive an email with further details
  • Each site has a volunteer limit
  • You will be notified via email if your selected site is full

Bryn Mawr Thrift Shop

Camilla Hall

  • Camilla Hall is the Convent Home and Healthcare Center of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. SHA volunteers will be reading to and visiting with the sisters.

Gift of Life House

  • THIS SITE IS CURRENTLY FULL
  • Gift of Life Family House serves as a “home away from home” for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging, meals, and supportive services to those who travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for transplant-related care. SHA volunteers will be baking treats for the residents.

Mother's Home

  • Mothers’ Home is a residential shelter in Darby which provides a safe haven for vulnerable, pregnant women in a crisis who choose life as a sacred gift. SHA volunteers will be working on gardening projects and organization throughout the center.

Project Ensonga

  • Project Ensonga at Sacred Heart Academy makes and distributes sustainable feminine hygiene kits for students at partner schools globally as girls without sanitary supplies often stay home from school during their periods, missing up to two months of education and opportunity each year. SHA volunteers will work on various steps of the creation process including sewing, cutting fabric, organizing supplies, ironing and more. Sewers- please bring your machine! This event will occur in the Dining Room at Sacred Heart Academy.

Sacred Heart Academy

  • Greeting Cards @ SHA
  • Younger volunteers have the opportunity to make greeting cards for neighbors who are in need of cheer and care. There will be stations to make cards for senior residents at Dunwoody Village and Fair Acres as well as stations to make cards for homeless children. This event will occur in the Sun Porch at Sacred Heart Academy.

Sacred Heart Academy Wetlands

  • The Wetlands on the campus of Sacred Heart Academy are being restored as a valuable wetland, accessible to students, researchers, and the community. The Darby Creek Valley Association partners with SHA volunteers who will work on cleaning weeds and debris as well as new planting.

  • The Share Food Program is a nonprofit organization serving a regional network of community organizations engaged in food distribution, education, and advocacy. SHA volunteers will pack food boxes at the main distribution center.

St. Raphaela Center

  • St. Raphaela Center is a ministry of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a worldwide religious community whose mission is to celebrate God's unconditional love by promoting wholeness, peace and reconciliation. SHA volunteers will be working on gardening projects on the exterior of the center.
