A Broken Clock

A broken clock sits on the tilted mantel:
A suitable throne for a crooked king,
From which he can gaze upon his subjects.
From which he can hold sovereignty
Over the faded parlor walls
Over the frayed oriental carpet
Over the dog resting below it.
Yet he rests beneath what he controls the most.
A broken clock ticks backwards in the night:
A suitable pastime for a crooked king,
From which he can decree punishment
From which he can decree reward
He sends forth mistakes and regrets
He sends forth brows, yet to be lined with stress
He sends forth screams and tears and rage
Yet to those he favors, he sends joy, hope, and love.
A broken clock races forward in the day:
A suitable game for a crooked king,
From which he can bestow the long anticipated sunrise
From which he can bestow the fleeting dying twilight
His greedy hands grasp at merriment
His greedy hands grasp at lazy times of peace
His greedy hands grasp at my words before I can say them.
Yet though his arms are outstretched, he finds they elude his grasp.
A broken clock sits on a tilted mantel:
A suitable throne for a crooked king,
From which he reigns supreme for now
From which he dictates his will
Time is seconds
Time is years
Time is eons
And even he, time’s master, is subject to its passing.
