On March 20, SHA Alumna Marie DeLiva '09 spoke to a group of students in the art studio about her journey from studying art in high school at Sacred Heart Academy to her present career as an illustrator. Marie graduated from the University of the Arts and is based in Philadelphia. Marie shared tips on art portfolios for college admissions to the rigors of an art major in college, to careers as freelancers and commercial artists. Marie showed her art progression bringing works from high school, college, and current day projects working for an organization creating graphics for gaming machines in casinos.  She also explained how the business end of being an artist is very important and encouraged the girls to take business courses in college to be fully prepared as an artist. Marie says, "I am inspired by the vibrant life and colors of nature, and capture that in my illustrations.  Each piece narrates its own story and brings the viewer along for the ride."

Marie has experience ranging from:

  • Casino-based slot illustration, animation, and design
  • Editorial illustration
  • Trading card illustration
  • T-shirt design
  • Children's book illustration
  • Portraiture
  • Graphic design and more.

Thank you, Marie, for your meaningful conversations and Mrs. Markowitz for organizing this for your art class and students during community time.
