Kerry Newby teaches 5th and 6th grade Math, 7th Pre-Algebra, 9th Algebra I, and 9th Honors Algebra I at Sacred Heart Academy. To build community in her classes, Miss Newby begins each upper school class with the Sacred Heart Prayer. After this, she enjoys spending the first few minutes of class conversing with her students about their day, weekend, workload, extracurriculars, etc. Currently, her favorite digital tool for teaching is JamBoard, which allows her to connect with the virtual students.
In teaching the whole child, Miss Newby encourages risk-taking and social-emotional growth through challenging word problems and setting her expectations high because of the faith she has in her students.
Miss Newby assigns hands-on projects to her middle school classes that coincide with real-world math scenarios. Miss Newby describes why she enjoys working with adolescent girls in a recent open house video. To develop critical thinking skills and creativity for the 21st Century, her sixth-grade students collaborated on a banner consisting of 20 pennants, each consisting of a challenging multi-step algebraic equation.
Miss Newby is inspired by her students when she watches their "light bulbs" go off when they grasp a difficult concept. She also enjoys seeing her students' confidence in themselves grow over the course of the year.
Aside from teaching math, Miss Newby also coached SHA's middle school field hockey this past fall. As a former college athlete at LaSalle University, she loved getting back out on the field and scrimmaging with the girls. She currently moderates the middle school "De-stress Club" in which students enjoy calming music and intricate coloring pages during club time.
Beyond Sacred Heart, Miss Newby enjoys spending time with her family and friends in Sea Isle City, NJ!
