Thanksgiving Dinner Donation Drive

This morning, Sacred Heart Academy delivered Thanksgiving dinners to Blessed Virgin Mary Food Pantry in Darby. In total, the items filled six vans/SUVs and one flatbed truck with just turkeys! The BVM volunteers were overwhelmed with Sacred Heart's generosity. Much of the food pantry was bare when the delivery arrived but by the time the delivery volunteers left, the pantry was ready to serve families already waiting in line. Six Upper School CSC leaders helped load and unload the heavy boxes of Thanksgiving dinner sides, approximately 250 turkeys, and 200 pies.

A special thank you to the work of the Mothers' Association who helped SHA secure 200 donated turkeys from Giant in Broomall and for coordinating the Linvilla Orchards pie donations. One of the pantry directors commented that the BVM Pantry is normally equipped to serve fifty families but today they would be able to accommodate over 100 families.

Caitlin Hughes '19 and Abby Loranca '19 shared their experiences saying,

“When we arrived, a small line of people waiting for food had already formed outside, even though they would not be allowed in for a couple more hours. When we first went inside with donations, it looked empty, but soon it filled up. At the same time, the line continued to grow and wrap around the building. People were there with their own small shopping carts, hoping there would be enough food. You can really see the importance of a food pantry at the holidays. Of course food is always needed, but so many holiday traditions center around a meal. We could really see our ability to make a difference.”

Special thanks to everyone who helped make the delivery possible:

  • Bev McBrearty and Beth Porter for coordinating the Middle and Lower School donations

  • Betsy Moore, Eileen Day, Ashley McGinnis, Kristen Salvato, Trish Heeney, and Diane Gobeil for driving today

  • Mary Pat Heilmann for coordinating the pie sale and turkey donations from Giant

  • Jen Sullivan, Ed Boyle (her dad), Jack Sullivan (her son), and Bill Santora for driving and unloading a flatbed truck of 200 turkeys

  • Lisa Carey, Michelle Sheibley, and Meg Tredinnick for covering class for the drivers

  • Joe Fordyce and Chip LePera for moving many boxes of food

  • All of you for donating!
