St. Madeleine Sophie Center
San Diego, California
A rising senior, Carly Knowlton participated in Network Summer Service at the St. Madeleine Sophie Center in California.
The St. Madeleine Sophie Center serves individuals with developmental disabilities through nationally recognized innovative programs. Combining the culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. The St. Madeleine Sophie Center educates and empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. Sacred Heart students help live out this mission during a summer service week. Network students are immersed in the program and get to know the participants, socializing and working their daily activities alongside them. Our activities could include education classes, gardening, arts and crafts, computers, dance, exercise, swimming, employment skills.
The most important thing I did on this trip was to connect with a new student each day. I got to know them better and make a new friend. I learned that someone with a disability is just like us and go through the same problems that we do.
I became more aware of disabled people and learned to feel more comfortable with them. I am glad I had this opportunity to do so.
I made 12 new friends from different Sacred Heart Schools all over the country. I am so thankful that this trip was through our Sacred Heart Network because it gave me a chance to talk to the girls about the similarities and differences within our schools. We worked with Goal 3, strengthening our service each day.
I would love to come back to school and tell everyone how great this trip was. I really enjoyed the service and bonded with the other girls. Our activities in San Diego after service each day were so much fun and I can not wait to visit California again!
