Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Guided by the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and rooted in Catholic faith, Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr (SHA) commits to fostering a community that is welcoming, affirms the individual experience of each student, and nurtures students to embrace their inherent value as a human being created in the image and likeness of God. Our school believes that an inclusive learning community is integral to achieving academic success and individual growth, while equipping students to serve the world with compassion, critical-consciousness, authenticity, and hope. In our diverse world, Sacred Heart Academy prepares and inspires students to be active, informed, and responsible citizens at local, national, and global levels.

Intertwining Vines, authored by Convent of the Sacred Heart, a Sacred Heart Network School, illuminates how our identities as Catholic, independent, and Sacred Heart Schools intertwine to root our DEI programs.

Support the Summit

Six students from the Student Diversity Board will participate in the 2026 National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Student Civic Leadership Summit in January 2026. The Summit, in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, will bring together high school students from across the country to Washington, D.C. to build knowledge, develop strategies, and hone leadership skills.  Your support will make a powerful and direct impact on our students as they learn how to make an impact on the world!

DEI&B Programming

Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging is played out in our opportunities for students and adults in our community.

SHA Student Diversity Board

As a collective of students from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences, the Student Diversity Board aims to ensure that all students feel they are created in the image and likeness of God (Goal IV.i), provide an avenue for transformational student leadership (Goals V.vii), uplift values of equity and inclusion (Goal III.iii), and provide opportunities that will prepare you to serve the common good in an interdependent world (Goal III.i).  In this leadership role, students engage in meaningful discussions, offer insights that influence the development of programs, policies, and practices impacting the student community, and participate in both on-campus and off-campus events and help to organize the SHA Diversity Conference.

A committee of representative faculty and staff supports the school community in the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in order to enhance the life and dignity of the human person. As Sacred Heart educators who are committed to lifelong learning and intercultural competence, we strive to align our work with Goal III.iii which calls us to analyze and work to eradicate social structures, practices, systems, and values that perpetuate racism and other injustices. Input and action by the DEIB Committee may include but are not limited to mechanisms for learning and communion, leadership development, staffing, resourcing, data collection and analysis, policy development and messaging across constituencies.

On Wednesday, April 2, the Student Diversity Board (pictured below), Señora Kosman, and Mrs. James Abiola hosted the 3rd Annual SHA Diversity Conference for the Upper School. The conference is an event for our community to connect, reflect, and grow together. The 2025 theme, “Celebrating Our Differences," honors the richness of our identities and encourages us to move beyond tolerance to truly appreciate, embrace, and uplift one another. Students and teachers began the day with a thoughtful keynote by Dr. Danielle Lynch, Director of Athletics at Haverford College. Students engaged in reflective activities, workshops, and an affinity group led by the Student Diversity Board leaders.
