Upper School Scholarship: Sophie Scholars

Sophie Scholars program is first presented to Class of 2026 in the spring of 2023.

Students in the Class of 2026 are invited to apply at the beginning of Grade 10.

Applicants must have a strong and consistent academic record. Students must submit unofficial transcripts and grades will be continually reviewed as students progress through the program.

Students may commit to more than one program with approval from the Director of Academics. Teachers recommend students to apply for the Math & Science Track and Writing Intensive Track.

Sophie Scholars is a prime example of Scared Heart Goal II: a deep respect for intellectual values. 

Upon successful completion of the SAAT, MAST, or WIT program, students will be honored at a reception and receive an award from the program chair. 

As founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat possessed a fervent desire to make known the heart of Jesus in the world by recognizing the dignity and talents of each individual. As a child, she was called Sophie, and she was privately tutored during a time when education for women was uncommon. When Sophie began the Society, she included the founding of schools for girls as a central part of their vocation. In these early schools, the sisters, known as the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, believed in the potential of each student to develop wisdom as a gift of the Holy Spirit and as a gift to share with the world. 

Established in 1865, Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr (SHA) is a Catholic, independent, all-girls, K-12 school on the Main Line in suburban Philadelphia. SHA is small by design, allowing students to develop their full potential academically, socially, and spiritually in an exceptionally caring environment. SHA is also part of the International Sacred Heart Schools comprised of 150+ schools in 41 countries. Within this consortium is the Network of Sacred Heart Schools composed of 25 schools in the United States and Canada. The groups connect SHA students in an international community and offer distinguished exchange, service, and academic  programs that further prepare students for an increasingly global world, an appreciation for differences, and a compassion for all.
