Sacred Heart basketball yet again showed its dominance in District 1, bringing home the championship trophy with a decisive 49-32 win over Delco Christian on Saturday. It's the sixth straight District 2A championship for head coach Zach Shuler.
Despite a season full of injuries and illness, the Lions weren't to be denied thanks to a stifling defense and well-balanced offense. Freshman MJ Donohue led all scorers with 13 points, while a trio of seniors -- Ainsley Davis (10 points), Kyra Santora (10 points) and Kathryn Gallagher (6 points) -- came through in crunch time.
But the defense was the difference-maker. With Kyra leading the way, SHA forced 28 turnovers, 16 of which came in the first half. SHoops never looked back, even as Delco Christian cut the lead to six at one point. But that would be as close as they would get as the seniors sprung into action to defend their reigning champion status.
SHoops was eager for the rematch with the Knights, who beat SHA just three weeks ago by 20 points. Saturday's victory propels Sacred Heart into the first round of the PIAA state tournament, scheduled for March 8.
