Technology

Lower School students learn the required skills to integrate technology into other areas of the curriculum. Instruction in the early grades focuses on becoming familiar with technology resources and learning to navigate computer programs and apps on the ipad for educational and creative exploration. Beginning in 2nd grade, technology instruction shifts to using the computer as a means to gain information in a safe and responsible manner. Students also explore various websites and computer programs to enhance their studies in other curricular areas. Helping students learn to use the computer as a tool to discover, collaborate, and construct and/or present information is the goal. Classes are in the Innovation Center which allows them to collaborate on STEM activities, code robots and learn to navigate a variety of Google apps. Students are taught how to create in Google Docs, Slides and Sheets. Keyboarding, digital citizenship, coding and iPad skills are also taught at this level. The goal is to inspire students to work collaboratively with each other, and to show their understanding of the knowledge and skills they have learned in creative and meaningful ways. 

Middle School students meet challenges with logic and creativity using a variety of digital resources.Technology instruction strives to reinforce student knowledge through presentation, research, problem-solving and collaboration skills. Students are introduced to Google Applications and technology skills that are fundamental and built upon each year. Students work on developing and practicing an understanding for Internet safety, programming and robotics, design thinking, creative expression, and multimedia communication.

7th and 8th grade students participate in a 1:1 program with Chromebooks. The goal of the 1:1 Chromebook take-home program is to prepare students for 21st-century college and career readiness skills. Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to be successful and competitive in their future endeavors.

Upper School students participate in a "bring your own device" program. Personal PCs or Macs can be used and students are enrolled into our Google For Education Program. The school’s commitment to technology education ensures that students receive instruction through a variety of avenues. Students refer to each teacher's device policy for class. As part of the daily schedule, students utilize the school portal (mySHA) to access a multitude of information including, but not limited to, announcements, assignments, grades, and schedules. Technology instruction is part of the classroom experience and specific to each teacher's use of digital resources pertaining to their subject. All digital skills learned will be beneficial in their higher ed and career paths.
